Tactics
- The Churchill Tank can only be used with the Royal Engineers Doctrine.
- The Petard Mortar Cost Munitions to use, so use wisely.
- Petard Mortar Rounds can destroy building and emplacements in one or two hits.
- The Petard Mortar can also be used to engage units, but it does not do a good job at that and should be used for support mostly.
History
The Churchill AVRE, short for Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers, was a specialist engineering variant of the Churchill IV Infantry Tank. Armed with a 290mm Spigot Mortar, the AVRE was ineffective for tank combat and meant for leveling emplacements and fortifications. The short-ranged mortar carried a significant high explosive charge, and the Churchill's armour allowed it to close-in on defenses that would have knocked out a lighter tank. However loading the mortar required a crew member to expose themselves and manually insert the shell. Their numbers were few and concentrated in the 79th Armoured Division.
